My Experience as an Online Student: The Pros, Cons, and Lessons Learned
A few summers ago, I enrolled in an online HDFS course. At the time, I thought it would be the perfect way to earn credits while still enjoying my summer. The flexibility of an online class was appealing because I could study at my own pace, complete assignments from the comfort of my home, and avoid the rigid schedule of an in-person class. However, I soon realized online learning has its own unique set of challenges.
What I Liked About the Class
One of the best things about my online HDFS course was the ability to work ahead. I liked being in control of my learning schedule, especially since I had a summer job. The recorded lectures were a lifesaver because I could pause, rewind, and review them as needed which is something I couldn't do in a traditional classroom. The discussion boards also provided an interesting way to interact with classmates, allowing me to read different perspectives on different topics.
What I Disliked About the Class
Despite the flexibility, there were a few aspects that I struggled with. First, I missed the face-to-face interaction with a professor and classmates. Sometimes, it felt like I was learning in isolation. Asking questions via email or discussion boards just wasn’t the same as raising my hand in class. Another challenge was time management. Without the structure of scheduled lectures, I had to be disciplined about setting aside time for studying. Procrastination became my biggest enemy especially since my phone is the thing that distracts me the most.
Do I Prefer Online Classes?
It depends. For summer courses, I love online learning because it allows me to balance work, time with family, and academics. However, for more challenging subjects, I prefer in-person classes where I can engage directly with my professor and peers.
Would I Retake the Class Online?
If I had the chance to retake that HDFS course, I might choose an in-person format instead. While the flexibility was great, I think I would have benefited from more real-time discussions and hands-on activities. Still, the experience taught me a lot about myself as a student because I thrive when I set a strict study schedule, but I also need social engagement to stay motivated.
My Strengths and Weaknesses as an Online Student
One of my biggest strengths in an online class is self-motivation. I enjoy working independently and at my own pace. However, my biggest weakness is time management. Without deadlines looming over me in a traditional classroom setting, I sometimes put things off until the last minute. Through this experience, I’ve learned to set daily goals and stick to a study routine, which has helped me become a more disciplined student.
Overall, taking an online course was a valuable experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me discover the kind of learning environment that works best for me. Would I take another online class? Absolutely, but only if the subject is something I feel confident tackling on my own!
